The European University Institute was founded in 1972 in the city Florence of Italy by the six founding Member States of the European Communities. The institute aims to offer advanced academic training and to promote research at the highest level. The EUI also offers courses for the Institute's doctorate or for the one-year Master's program in Law and also offer fellowships for postdoctoral applicants as well as for distinguished scholars. EUI hosts a diverse range of research projects, seminars, workshops, conferences, and summer schools. The buildings of the European University Institute are of historical and architectural interest. The collections of the library encompass over 3,000 current journals, over 70,000 working papers and approximately half a million books on law, economics, history, and the social sciences, with European issues being particularly well represented.
